Baby skin care is more complicated than most people think it is. Proper care of infant skin involves keeping the whole baby clean. Newborns especially are susceptible to skin conditions as they get used to life outside of the protection of Mother’s womb. Proper baby skin care involves making smart decisions all day long. Pretty much everything your baby has contact with during the day will have an effect on your baby’s skin. Don’t worry though: practicing proper skin care for your baby does not have to be difficult or complicated. It can be very easy if you know how to use your common sense. If you need some help figuring out a good routine, here are a few hints to help you out.
You don’t need to use powder when you change your baby’s diaper. Most parents choose to use powder because it will soak up moisture inside of the diaper and keep the baby dry.
Always make sure the baby’s bath water is not too hot before you put the baby into it. A baby’s skin is more easily burned by hot water than adults. You might not believe this but most people don’t start to like hot showers and hot baths until later on in life. Before setting your baby in his bathwater, test it with your elbow. You have very sensitive skin on your elbow so if your elbow feels like it is burning in the water, cool the water down! The warmest your baby’s bath water should be lukewarm.
This will keep you from accidentally burning your baby or cooling him off too much.
Acne isn’t only for teenagers, babies get it too. The hormones that the baby is surrounded by in the mother’s womb leads to the, after birth, development of acne. Oil production in the baby’s skin is caused by the mother’s hormones, the oil gets trapped in the pores and lead to infection. Do not try to treat these breakouts with adult acne remedies! They are much too harsh and can burn your baby’s skin. The acne will usually disappear in a few weeks as long as you keep the irritated area clean, you can do this with your normal bathing routine.
There are plenty of methods for practicing proper baby skin care. It is important to remember that proper skin care involves more than just a regular bath. Making sure your baby’s skin gets enough fresh air (aka “naked time”), finding the right laundry soap and always using sunscreen are other important factors in proper baby skin care. Don’t fret: you will get used to caring for your baby’s skin in no time. Before too long it will feel like second nature to you!
