Conquering A Mile In Six Minutes

I ran my first seven-minute mile as a kid in high school. I felt great about it – I was proud of myself and I knew that I was in good physical condition. However, even then I knew that I could be even faster. I set my goals accordingly and worked toward getting better times.

Unfortunately, I injured my knee not long after that. I tried to continue running for awhile but my performance just wasn’t the same. My knee had recovered within a year, but I wasn’t even trying anymore by that point.

Recently, however, I decided that I want to start running again. Not only did I want to match my old record of a seven-minute mile, but I wanted to beat it by running a six-minute mile. I knew it would be hard, but I knew that I could do it if I really tried.

I tried for weeks to run that six-minute mile, but I just couldn’t quite get there. I could easily run a seven-minute mile, and even six-and-a-half, but my body just gave out when I pushed it harder.

After keeping at it for awhile, I eventually accomplished my goal of running a six-minute mile. Here are a couple of tips that helped me meet the challenge.

You’ll not only want to master a 1:30 lap (running four of these laps will equal a six-minute mile), but a 1:15 lap as well. That may sound quite difficult, but if you can complete two 1:15 laps back-to-back, you’ll find it quite easy to complete the six-minute mile.

If running two 1:15 laps sounds difficult, that’s because it is! Mastering this quick pace, however, will prove very valuable in training you to complete the six-minute mile.

Now that I’ve successfully run a six-minute mile, I’ve set my sights on the 5:30 mile. I plan on meeting that challenge as well!
