I’m sure I’m not alone in that my acne gave me problems for years. I fought with it for over a decade and I was only able to get rid of it for good by visiting a doctor. For the several years that I had acne, however, everyone I knew tried to advise me on what was causing it.
Some said that I should eliminate greasy foods, such as fried foods, from my diet because they were the cause of acne. That’s not entirely true, however. If you happen to get grease on your skin, it could clog up the pores and cause acne, but this myth is mostly just perpetuated by parents in order to get their kids to avoid junk food.
Another myth that I was told regarding acne was that it’s caused my poor hygiene. Not washing your face actually doesn’t cause acne in any way because breakouts are caused by dead skin and oil under the facial skin. It’s always a good idea to practice good personal hygiene, but in this case, it wasn’t the solution I needed.
Tanning was also suggested as a cure. While getting some sun might darken the skin and cover up the acne a little, it doesn’t provide an actual cure for the acne. Plus, being in the sun and tanning too much can cause skin cancer down the road as well as aging the skin prematurely.
Here are some of the actual, 100% true facts about acne.
Don’t let your hair fall in your face. Hair contains lots of oils that can clog up pores and lead to acne. Keep it away from your face to avoid this problem altogether.
Makeup is sometimes responsible for breakouts. If you think that your makeup is causing your acne, look for the special brands that are made for people with such problems. You might find that it eliminates your acne completely.
Elevated stress levels can cause acne to develop. Some people are more likely to experience this than others.
Next time your skin breaks out, think about your recent stress levels. If your breakouts seem to be correlated with high stress in your life, you may be able to improve your acne condition by taking it easy and reducing your stress levels.
