Weight Loss Diet Statistics

Americans can sometimes seem obsessed with weight loss. But this is because Americans eat too much. Americans also love junk food too much. And they don’t love a little bit of junk food. They love A LOT of junk food; they’re confused about how much a single portion size is.

Americans are overweight and obese. Why is that? Well…consider this. Italians love pasta. The French love cheese. Germans love beer. And what do Americans love? Some would say apple pie and baseball. But that answer doesn’t really reflect the current state of affairs. Americans actually love McDonalds and Burger King. Americans are becoming defined by fast food.

Fast food is a convenient alternative for many. Convenience is almost the only advantage of fast food. Even after all the negative attention the fast food industry’s response falls short of actual healthy options. (Pairing a bag of sliced apples with a canister of candy dipping sauce and fried chicken nuggets is not exactly a healthy option).

The following weight loss diet statistics are offered by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention: (Source: Health, United States, 2009, Table 67)

– 67% of adults (non-institutionalized) are either overweight or obese

– Of this group, 34% are obese

– 18% of all teenagers are overweight (teens = aged 12 to 19)

– 15% of 6 to 11 year olds are overweight

– 11% of children (aged 2 to 5) are overweight

It’s hard to argue with this kind of weight loss diet statistics. They really bring home the severity of the problem. The sheer wide spread nature of the issue is something that should draw a lot of attention from experts. While experts continue to study the cause and effect of being overweight or obese the basic situation can be easily defined. Too many people need to lose weight. Being unable to lose weight results in negative health. Individuals who need to lose weight need to access drastic weight loss through safe methods of weight loss.
