Weight Loss Program Behavior Modification

Repetition is what forms both bad and good habits. There is no exception when it comes to eating. If you have a habit of eating a snack while you are watching television you are reinforcing that habit and it will become second nature to you. The same is true of other habits. Some of these habits include: eating while you are cooking dinner, eating after you come in from a date, eating when your children come home from school, eating as soon as you come home, and eating while you are reading.

There are also some circumstances and moods that result in people eating even when they aren’t hungry. For instance these circumstances and mood include: the spouse brings home ice cream or candy, anxiety, nervousness, the spouse is out of town or out for the evening, the children are finally in bed, loneliness, happiness, fatigue, boredom, and anger. All of these circumstances or moods can result in an eating response. This list of circumstances and moods is endless.

Old habits are difficult to stop. The person must make it their goal to form new habits by using repetition in the same way in addition to breaking their old habits. People need to make some new and improved commitments daily. They should work each day to meet these commitments regardless if they feel like it or not. These daily commitments will help a person to form good habits. Don’t forget that it’s harder to feel your way into a new way of acting than it is to act your way into a new way of feeling.

However, it can be very difficult to resist temptation. But, once you have succeeded in resisting the first time, it often will become much easier to resist the second time. Before very long, you will be able to resist temptation because you’ll have formed a good habit each and every time that you are confronted with it. However, you will find it much easier to yield to temptation the second time if you yield to that temptation the first time.

This is what has become known as behavior modification among weight control groups and it is the result of these human weaknesses. All it means is that you are changing of your behavior. These methods will only work if you repeat them consistently such that they become second nature to you.
