A uterine fibroid Atlanta is a benign tumor that grows from the muscle cells of the uterus. Fibroids appear to be unrelated to most cases of uterine cancer, and having these tumors does not put a woman at any additional risk. Fibroids themselves are occasionally cancerous, but this is an extremely unusual scenario, which occurs in less than one in a thousand tumors. Additionally, the presence of benign fibroids does not affect the risk of cancerous ones.
The vast majority of fibroids do not require or receive treatment. The ones that do need treating may be treated with removal methods, or medications to lessen the woman’s symptoms. Painkillers are commonly prescribed for painful menstruation, and surgical removal of either just the fibroids, or the fibroids and uterus, are possible.
Less invasive methods of treatment are possible using ligation (cutting) or obstruction of the blood vessels that feed the tumor. If this supply is cut off, the tumor cannot continue to grow and typically withers and dies. These treatments are rated as just as successful in resolving symptoms as hysterectomies, and women prefer them over hysterectomies, as well.
