What Do You Know About Hair?

Many people are troubled by their hairs. Before you can manage your hairs well, you should understand the structure of your hairs. Hair is made of a protein, named keratin. Keratin is produced in hair follicles in the dermis layer of your scalp.

Hairs and scalp are protected by the natural oils, sebum secreted in sebaceous glands. The sebum also acts as lubricant to keep hair and scalp supple and smooth. But, excessive sebum secretion is also problematic. Over-secretion of sebum may result in oiliness while too little may cause dry skin and hair.

Every part of our body has their own function. The main functions of hair include retaining body heat and protecting our scalp from burning. As the amount of our hair is much lesser compared to other animals, therefore, the heat retaining power is significantly weaker.

Some people have more hairs while some people have less. In general, a person may have approximately 100,000 to 150,000 hairs on his scalp. In addition, Redheads generally have the fewer but thicker hairs while blondes usually have the more but finer hairs. Our hairs grow and shed according to their own life cycles. Under normal metabolism, we lose around 60 to 100 hairs every day. If you lose more than 100 hairs, this may be a sign of hair loss problem.

Our hair cells are continuously renewing and regenerating at the bottom of the follicle. Similar to any other cells in our body, they need nutrients and oxygen delivered by capillaries for normal metabolism.

Hairs at different places on the head grow at different rates. In general, they grow at around 1.25 cm (1/2 inch) per month. The new cells from the bottom push upwards and hardened to become the hair we see. Such growth may stop at some stage (around 3 to 4 months) for resting purpose. The old hair sheds when it is pushed by the new hair when growth begins again. Hair grows faster when heat from summer sun or exercise improves microcirculation to the hair follicles.
