What New Parents Should Know About Their Baby’s Skin Care

Caring for your new baby’s skin can seem overwhelming when you are a new parent. As a new parent it is easy to become overwhelmed with trying to be perfect. The good news is that proper baby skin care depends mostly on simple common sense. Keeping a baby’s skin clean does not involve expensive products. In fact, you don’t need many products at all! Read on to learn some hints and tips that you can use to put together your new baby’s skin care routine.

A baby’s bath does not need to last a long time. Believe it or not if your newborn’s bath time lasts too long it can be harmful for your baby! Limit baby’s bath time to three to five minutes each night-just enough time to get wet, get soapy and get rinsed off. Once you have rinsed off your baby, rub some light (baby) lotion or moisturizer into his skin and then towel him dry. Take care to dry your baby completely or the left over moisture could lead to rashes or yeast infections. If you’re doubtful of this just look at all of the folds and ripples in your baby’s skin; moisture can hide in all of those places! Be sure to use a soft towel!

Try to keep your baby out of direct sunlight until he or she is six months old because regular sunlight is far too harsh for a newborn’s skin to deal with. Once your baby is six months old you can take him or her into direct sunlight but make sure that he is completely covered in a strong (baby friendly) sunblock.

You also don’t need to overdo it on the soap to make sure that your baby is clean. You can thoroughly clean your baby with just a few drops of soap. Using more than that will dry out the baby’s skin and make it vulnerable to infections and other skin problems. Your baby’s skin should not come into direct contact with the actual soap. Use a soft washcloth to build up a soapy lather which will be perfectly effective in cleaning your baby and is easy to rinse off. Don’t try to lather up your baby’s whole body too early–get used to the process by washing one part of your baby’s body at a time. Handling a soapy baby can be very scary!

There are many different ways to care for your newborn’s skin. The truth is that baby skin care does not need to be complicated or difficult. As long as you choose the correct products and make practical decisions keeping your baby’s skin clean and clear should be relatively easy. Remember that you need to care for all of the skin on your baby’s body–don’t just focus on his face. Keeping your daughter or son’s skin clean and healthy is an all day long type of process but don’t worry too much about it. It won’t take long at all for keeping your child’s skin healthy to become little more than second nature. Before you know it you won’t even need to focus on it to keep your baby’s skin healthy. It will simply be automatic!
