Foot cramps can be quite painful and may stand as a barrier in carrying out daily activities due to the consistent pain and inability to move it. The duration of these cramps may sometimes be for only a couple of minutes, or in some cases may be as long as days. A pull of the muscle or injury is usually what causes it.

The area of the foot at which the cramp takes place is the arch, toes, legs or the calf. Various causes may be accountable for a cramp to take place, such as having a lifestyle that does not involve much movement or exercise, or being slightly overweight.

On the contrary, having too active of a lifestyle, such as being involved in vigorous sports activity may also cause cramps. The reasons may be numerous; fortunately, there are many ways by which one can get relief from the pain associated with cramps.

Keeping the affected foot in such a posture that it is differing to the side of the cramp is an effective way. You can do this for some minutes every day, till it does not get treated completely, and massage it while keeping it in that position. This helps in providing relief to a great extent.

If you have gotten a cramp due to working out too much, use an ice pack immediately, over the area where you can feel the most pain. In case the cramp is too severe and causes extreme pain, using heat over it thrice a day is also a good idea to reduce the pain.

You can try a light exercise such as lifting your foot up to your waist, as this may help in improving the condition. If it seems to be in a bad condition, you might as well apply an elastic bandage over it. A dose of aspirin also helps in getting relief for the time being.

It is always best to give your foot some rest in case a cramp has taken place. So try to stay in bed for the time being, instead of putting more strain over it.
