Lemonade is made from lemons, water and sweetener – which can be sugar, syrup or honey. Lemons are acidic so ingesting lemon juice straight up will only add to the acidity in your stomach. This is not what you want for your body; too much acidity in your stomach is not what you want when you are prone to acid reflux. However, lemon juice diluted with lots of water and softened with sugar will not have such a bad effect on acid reflux, and is a great source for vitamin C. Limit your lemonade intake if you are prone to acid reflux.
Drinking lemonade, lemon juice, or other juices from citrus fruits is recommended to those who suffer from acid-related conditions, such as acidosis, gastritis, and ulcer. Introducing more acid in the body of those whose blood already have high proportions of acid can have improved sensation in the stomach area. Heartburn happens when the acid in the stomach travels upwards with saliva toward the esophagus and the throat. This results to sour taste in the throat and mouth, as well as discomfort in the stomach due to high acidity level.
People with severe acid reflux should avoid anything acidic or spicy, this includes lemon juice, lemonade, any citrus, do not even think of trying the lemonade diet. Repeat acid reflux causes the tissue lining of the digestive track to become heavily scarred. So imagine the damage that has already been done there, and you really do not want to take any chances. Eat foods that are easy to chew and digest. Like the kind they routinely serve in hospitals. Replacing lemonade with other equally nutritious juice will not only satisfy your thirst but also keeps you away from acid reflux.
If you get only mild acid reflux and if you suffer the condition only when you eat too much or drink too much alcohol, this is normal. There is no need to avoid lemonade completely, unless you think that lemonade triggers your particular stomach acidity. For good measure, avoid drinking lemonade or anything acidic, spicy or alcoholic on an empty stomach. If the acidity in your stomach increases because of lemonade, this becomes doubly worst if there is nothing else in your stomach to buffer this acidity. Avoid foods and drinks that are known to trigger acidity in our body.
The effectiveness of lemon juice in the treatment of acid reflux is very much contrary to what many think that it makes the condition worse. The potassium in lemon is an acid-neutralizer, making it an easy solution to the said problem. Taking hot water with lemon 45 minutes before meals can also cancel the effect of gastric acid in the food, and it also improves food digestion. To make the taste of this solution better, adding a few drops of honey will make it more agreeable. Aside from lemon juice, milk and coconut milk can as well cure acidity. Drinking the milk of raw coconut and taking a little quantity of milk in a thrice-daily basis are additional two ways to allay the effect of acid reflux.
