Anti-aging skin care products are very popular today, which is not surprising as we are all living longer, fuller lives so why shouldn’t we want to look younger for ever? This group of products generally work by enabling the synthesis of collagen, which is the main protein of connective tissue in animals and the most abundant protein in mammals. Collagen is related to other Substances called anti-oxidants which help reduce the anti-aging process.
One of the best known anti-oxidants is vitamin C and despite continual research, no-one body involved can decide just exactly how much our body should consume on a daily basis. Unfortunately all skin care treatments that use vitamin C have the problem of atmospheric oxidization to contend with once the product is exposed to the air.
Other skin care treatments which mimic the effects of vitamin C are being tried all the time which are hoped to be more stable in the atmosphere and also cheaper to produce. These new anti-oxidant products are not quite as good as vitamin C although other naturally occurring compounds, vitamin E and lipoic acid can achieve the same effect.
The body uses vitamin E as an anti-oxidant and is also used to increase the natural defense we have against disease, including many types of cancer, it is a fat soluble vitamin in people’s blood. It is known to combat the signs of aging very effectively by reversing skin damage caused by the aging process.
Phytochemicals aren’t produced by the body but are extracted from a number of plants and used in many anti-aging skin care products to combat the signs of aging. A further benefit of these phytochemicals is their ability to prevent the onset of breast cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer all of which are on the increase globally.
Surprisingly, the group of vitamins; B5, B6, and B12 have also shown that they can be used to help reduce the effects of aging. This just goes to highlight just how complex and far reaching the whole field of anti-aging skin care products is and why so much more research is required.
In time new discoveries will be made advancing our understanding of the aging process and products that can reduce or reverse the effects more successfully. In time it is hoped that less expensive and more reliable anti-aging skin care products will become available for a larger number of people to use.
They cannot replace natural skin care remedies. What proportion of the population actually eat healthily, take plenty of exercise, drink sufficient water and obtain restful and regular sleep?
