Your Skin Can Still Look Great After 40

Is there a way that we can avoid wrinkles, lines, dry skin, and other problems from making our skin look as old as we are? It almost seems like yesterday when we were much younger, feeling that the day our skin would dry out and/or look old would never happen ? remember those fun hours spent sunbathing or getting a tan on the beach?

Let us face it ? we are older now and the once so youthful skin we once enjoyed now feels dry and coarse. Is there any way at all to look and feel younger and get some of that glow back into our skin?

The sun that we used to bask underneath so often when we were younger is responsible for our skin’s extrinsic aging, while our genes affects intrinsic aging. While some deterioration of the skin goes along with the aging process, there are ways we can lessen its effects.

Try cutting down on facial expressions and grimaces. Frowning, smiling or raising your brows repeatedly can cause those deep furrows around your eyes and mouth and across your forehead.

The way you sleep could make a big difference. It may be a habit for most of us to either sleep sideways with our cheek against the pillow or face-down pressed against the pillow. This could lead to sleep lines forming in your chin and cheeks. Sleeping on your back, on the other hand, would minimize the effects of sleep lines on your face.

Smoking is a nasty habit ? drop it! Not only is smoking bad for your lungs, it can also age you with lines and wrinkles and make your skin yellowish and stiff. When you quit smoking the lines and unhealthy coloring and texture will immediately begin to disappear.

Wear sunscreen. Yes, you can use sunscreen on a regular basis, and in fact, use it every day. Be sure you choose a broad spectrum (UVA and UVB) protector and at least 15 or higher SPF.

While you can’t really do anything about the intrinsic (genetic) factors that contribute to aging skin, you can opt for a medical treatment such as dermabrasion, chemical peeling, botulinum or injectable fillers.

No need to get a full and complete face lift ? this is tampering with nature, and furthermore, radio frequency and other newer treatments are rising in popularity.

Especially if you’re considering a medical procedure, the first person you should see would be your nearest dermatologist. Depending on your type of skin, your dermatologist would be able to advice you of the best medication or medical procedure to go for.
