There isn’t a whole lot of gear that is required for the P90x home workout program. You’ll need dumbbells or resistance bands for the weight training part of the program, and a pull-up bar for the variety of pull-ups and chin-ups you’ll be doing throughout the 90 days. I have been using Beachbody’s (the company behind P90x) pull-up bar for a few months now.
During these last months I have tested and used it quite a bit, so it has definitely been time tested. You use it around twice a week over the 90 day program, so having a pull-up bar that works well is a must.
Some important aspects to consider when purchasing a chin-up bar is durability, ease of installation, and functionality. I think everyone wants a bar that will last, be easy to install, and work well.
How does it fair in terms of durability? I was 206 lbs at my heaviest, and it never bent, buckled, or broke. It shows no signs of stress or bending. It is made of heavy gauge steel that can hold up to 300 lbs. Beachbody had their bar tested by a product testing company to see how durable it was. Their bar was able to perform 195,000 reps with a weight of 400 lbs. A competitors bar was tested as well and lasted for one-quarter of the reps the Beachbody bar was able to handle.
As far as installation goes, I don’t know how it could get any easier. I was skeptical at first after hearing it needed no hardware to install it, but after seeing it for myself, it is my favorite part about the bar. No tools and no hardware is needed to mount it to a doorway.
How functional is it? Most pull-up bars are literally just a straight bar. This one has several grip positions so that you can do a variety of different pull-ups. In total there are 12 different places to put your hands, so it is extremely functional.
What about the negative points? I found that when I first bought it I wasn’t able to use it when I first did P90x. The house I was living in at the time had decorative door trim that made it impossible to mount it. However, in the new place I’m living at now, it fits just fine. It fits in 24-32 inch wide doorways.
