For many people with depression low self esteem is also an issue too. Is it possible the two are connected, or is it just a coincidence? Does low self esteem cause depression or is it the other way around? Or, is it at all possible that there is no relation between the two?
Low self esteem and depression are not always walking hand in hand. Some cases of depression have a specific cause, for example the hormonal fluctuations that cause post natal depression, grief after the loss of a loved one, or post traumatic stress disorder.
In these and other cases, depression can affect somebody who normally has a high or normal level of self esteem. Even if their self esteem is temporarily compromised while they are depressed, it will gradually recover when the depression is gone.
Unfortunately, low self worth brought on by other causes may not be as easily reversible. It may even be something so deep that it affects someone’s life from early childhood on. Somebody like that may suffer from low grade depression most of the time. Sadly, they might be so used to feeling that way that they don’t even realize something is wrong. Low self esteem if the cause of their depression.
It so often happens that depression, low self esteem and anxiety all come to work together. Anxious people are often expecting bad things to happen, more than the average person does. Individuals that suffer from low self esteem seem to assume that bad things are bound to happen to them more than they happen to other people.
We often receive exactly what we are expecting. If we assume someone will treat us poorly, they most likely will. And, if we expect to lose a promotion to someone else, we are probably going to be correct. Unfortunate happenings cause anxious people to be even more anxious, and they sadly validate a person with low self esteem when they think they are worse than other people.
It isn’t shocking to find out that this kind of attitude can easily lead to depression. People who place a low value on themselves are not likely to be happy and outgoing. They immediately assume that others don’t like them just as much as they don’t like themselves. And very often they are right. It can be very hard for people to like someone that has such negative views of the world and everybody. Not many people are cut out to be around depressed people. And sadly, this makes one feel even lower about themselves.
Most people in this situation need to seek treatment for depression immediately. Depression can be successfully treated, so you should definitely check with your doctor about it.
Most depressed people seem to share the belief that life is what it is, and no treatment will change that. They are absolutely wrong in this belief. The belief itself is part of the issue of depression and it will change as depression is fought. So do not hesitate to seek help with depression low self esteem and any other related issues that you have.
