Six Starving Kids Defeat Depression Era Fat Loss Plan With Secret Family Recipe!

I always wonder how my family put together this secret recipe. The only thing I know for sure is that it was created some eighty years ago in the middle of the Great Depression. People didn’t need a Fat Loss Plan back in those days, and that is a serious statement.

The family was built of three brothers, three sisters, and a mother. Don’t ask about the old man, he was gone, and under bad circumstances. Anyway, I always imagine the six kids asking their mother what was for dinner, down to the last few items in the cupboard, and deciding to throw everything into the pot for a last meal.

A couple of pounds of good ground hamburger and a can of Campbells Chicken Soup, not much for six skinny children. So let’s beef it up with a cup of rice. Now, what kind of veggies do we have to throw into the pot?

Let’s see, here’s an onion, pretty old, sitting in corner of the cupboard. Ooh, look, there’s a few stalks of celery! And, by the way, is salt a vegetable?

So there it was, six measly ingredients, an Anything Stew of kingly proportions, and the family could put off starving till the next day. So they mixed everything together in a big pot, stuffed logs in the old stove, and sat around the kitchen to await the result. The conversation was probably subdued, and a drooling aroma filled the old kitchen.

Grandma portioned it out, and the kids chowed down, and I mean like nobody’s business. In a trice, everything was gone. What had replaced the make up stew was a round eyed taste and a belly satisfaction that cold not be denied.

The Goop, for that is what they called it, had turned out to be delicious, filling, and stuck to the ribs. The hamburger and chicken soup gave a spot of protein and texture, and the rice expanded to fill the belly. The onion was for health and who knows what the celery did!

During my own childhood, some 40 years later, my father would occasionally take command of the kitchen stove. On those days my brother and sister and I would sit at the table and smell the aroma. What started out as a solution to the depression era fat loss plan, if you get my drift, had turned out to be a delicacy simple in make up, yet sublime to the tastebuds.
