#10 You use the wrong words. If you think about it, the reason you’ve failed in the past to get fit and lose weight is motivation. Let me guess. You couldn’t, wouldn’t, can’t, didn’t, shouldn’t…blah, blah, blah. These kind of words create patterns in our heads. Use other words to empower yourself. Start with I will, I can, I should, I’ll do it. Even if you feel pain (provided your Doc has given you clearance to grind it out) keep going. Slow down, but be brave. Your big body will thank you for gutting it out.
# 9 Nudity is optional. Did you know some people workout buck naked? Yeah, it’s this really obscure cult. It has something to do with seeing your body. Not sure why you would want to if you’re fat:-)
#8 Fake it. Just keep reading. This will make sense. One of the best ways to start working out to get fit is becoming comfortable in your workout routine. So, for the first day or two fake it. Get into your workout area. Watch your get fit tape or go through the weight routines. But don’t do the workout. Just get used to being there. I know, it sounds kind of dumb. But if you’re new to this whole get fit thing, then you’re going to need to feel groovy about spending time working out.
#7 Write it. I learned this when I was a pre-med student at the University of Southern Maine. My biology professor made us write down (by hand on paper) summaries of every chapter. At first I thought it was pretty lame. Only, after doing it for a few weeks it helped. There’s some kind of connection between your brain and the written word. Once you write it, you own it. So, grab some paper. Next, write about your new get fit routine. Then write about why you’re going to stick with it. Try it. You’ll be amazed how it helps you keep getting jiggy and thin.
# 6 Dieting is complete hogwash. You need to eat for two reason. First, nutrition. Second as you begin to build muscle, you’ll need protein to support the process. Forget about starving. Instead, cut your portion sizes in half and eat anything you want. But hold off on a 10 ounce glass of blue cheese dressing.
# 5 Europeans are 45% skinnier than Americans. Why? Easy. Everything you probably hate to eat is what will get you skinny. Europeans eat boat-loads of fresh vegetables. Plus they walk all over the place. I know, it sounds thrilling doesn’t it? Not. However, a simple balanced diet with regular movement (besides clicking your computer mouse 8000 times a week) will get you into those slinky clothes you thought were ready to be thrown out.
# 4 Jumping is by far the most radical workout. Need proof? Run out to the store. Buy a jump rope. Drive home. Start jumping. Can you go more than a minute? The first time I tried this routine I almost died from exhaustion after 26 seconds (not to mention falling over in my garage knocking over my 16 year old husky dog Maggie).
# 3 Shut your eyes. If you’re not sleeping 7-8 hours a night you’re screwed. In October of 2005 the Washington Post reported on a study of 10,000 adults between the ages of 32 and 49. The researchers proved there is a link between lack of sleep and obesity. The findings suggest we all have trouble producing hormones which regulate appetite if we get less than 7 hours of sack time.
#2 Diets are for dopes. Listen, if you’re into calorie restriction, that’s all good. But you need nutrition. Without it, you’ll be lacking vitamins and minerals to help you recover from your workout. If you’ve still not convinced, try this: go one day with little to no food. But workout. The next day, eat small meals. Of course, workout too. Then see how you felt each day. I would bet dollars to donuts (yum) you’ll feel pretty nice the day you ate.
#1 Pain is good. Once you’re cleared by your physician to start sweating it out, guess what? You are going to suffer with some pain. Guess what? As long as you don’t bust a groin muscle you’ll survive. Expect at least a truck-load or two of pain in your first 30 days. The thing about pain is it’s evidence you are doing something other than watching old Lost episodes sitting on the couch with a bag of chips.
After 30 days, you’ll probably be pain-free.
