Nothing needs to stop you from getting a good exercise workout. We often think we need to get to the gym or have a spare room with an ab trainer and home fitness studio, along with a set of dumbbells of all sizes. But it’s surprising what a good all body workout you can get in your living room with nothing more than a chair.
Chairs aren’t just for sitting on! In fact, sitting too much is part of our problem and inhibits our opportunities to exercise. At home and at work, look out for opportunities to stand at our jobs so that our metabolism can work fast. The mere act of having to stand forces our bodies to use more exertion on maintaining ‘homeostasis’ – that is, keeping us and our bodies taut and in place. Sitting encourages the body to flop about and spend less energy.
A chair is a great prop for that classic exercise the push-up! A chair can help you work the top, mid and lower chest muscles. Repeat these three types of push-ups 15 times each. Always make sure your chair is stable and pushed up flat against a wall for support. Start with an incline push up with the back of the chair to the wall and your hands on the seat.
Straight afterwards, swap the chair around and once again lock the chair firmly against the wall. Now assume a more regular push-up position with your hands on the floor, and feet on the seat. Perform a set of 10 – 20 of this exercise to pump your lower chest muscles.
You can also work the top part of the chest by repeating the first push-up exercise but this time, have your hands at the top of the chair back so that you are on a steeper incline.
Chairs also remind us of the perfect shape to work your quadriceps muscles. This time you are going to act like the chair next to you. Stand against the wall with your back against it and your legs out from the wall about the same distance as the front two chair legs. Lower your body down until it looks like you are sitting on an invisible chair. Again, a set of 10 -20 lunges is good.
You can repeat this cycle three or four times to get a simple full body workout. You’ll never look at a chair the same way again!
