Consuming fruits and vegetables has been shown in study after study to provide fiber, improve our health, and ward off certain illnesses and diseases. We all realize that we ought to eat more of them and we all remember that Mom told us about it, but were we listening?

Does that seem like an awful lot of servings every day? There are some easy and tasty ways to work fruits and vegetables into your meals, such as eating a piece of fruit with breakfast. Fruit can be a tasty addition to cereal, pancakes and waffles. For a snack, a banana or an apple would be great.

It is also simple to get some vegetables into your diet. You can change out your fast food meal for a nice salad. When you are eating out and order a sandwich, ask for lettuce, tomatoes and sprouts to be added. You can also add in vegetables when you are baking or cooking sauce or stew.

Do you like peanut butter? Add some celery with it. Kids especially love this snack. Toss some raisins on top as well! Cheese and celery make a nice snack too. Offer a variety of foods to those picky kids who change their mind every day about what they like to eat. Don’t make vegetables seem like a punishment to be gotten through by offering dessert only after they have all been eaten. How would the public’s ideas about veggies change if we said just the opposite.

Maybe some nice broccoli only after you’ve finished your chocolate cake. Do you like juice? That’s a great way to increase the number of vegetables and fruits in your diet. Juice does not provide you with any additional fiber for your diet. It is also easy to fill your stomach with juice and then not want to eat at all. There are also more calories in juices.

The benefits to your health of fruits and vegetables are difficult to avoid. Increasing your fruit and vegetable intake can contribute to reducing your chances for contracting 14 types of adult onset cancer. But you have to get your five. Studies show that people getting their five have a better chance over those who are only consuming 2 servings a day. Increasing fruits and vegetables in your diet can also decrease risks of blindness, stroke, and heart attack.

We can make up excuses all day long, but the fact remains that we know we should eat more produce. People love to cry that fruits and veggies are costly. Some people whine that they’re too busy to slice up healthy foods to eat. Yet, they’re not too busy to wait in the drive thru line for the heart attack in a bag. Other people complain that the fruits and vegetables go bad at just about the time they want to eat them.
