Diet Tips To Decrease Food Craving

If you try to eat healthy and take regular exercise I think it’s possible to allow for all types of food in your diet in moderation. But, sometimes you may find yourself overcome with evil cravings that seem to have a mind of their own!

Why exactly do we crave specific foods. Research has proven that those who have a tendency to binge have been restricted. While we don’t know if this is purely psychological or not, we do know that sometimes you simply want what you are not allowed to have. Whether your cravings for particular foods are because you are a little down, or your diet has been too limited, it can be hard to prevent. Here are five ways you can try to stop cravings for foods.

Stay hydrated. Often, when you feel hungry, your body is sending you a signal to drink more water. Water not only acts as an appetite suppressant, but it will keep your stomach full while fending off food cravings. It is also beneficial for digestion and overall well being.

Wait a few minutes. Have you ever noticed that cravings don’t last long? If you give them a few minutes you may just find you actually don’t need anything after all. Try doing something else to take your mind off the craving for 15 minutes, such as washing the dishes, calling a friend, or walking the dog, etc.

If you have certain cravings, avoid trigger foods. Your body will crave what you eat, so by changing what you eat you can make old cravings diminish. Certain foods, such as refined sugars, have an addictive property.

So, if you’re trying to avoid your food triggers, remember that the first few days are always going to be the most difficult. Again, it may not be possible to completely eliminate your old cravings, but if you can avoid your trigger foods for a while you may notice you begin to crave them less.

When the urge for a certain food hits, opt for a healthy snack. Ignoring your cravings, or trying to wash it down with a glass of water may not always work. Instead, drink a large glass of water and eat about 1 ounces of unsalted nuts/seeds to satiate your craving.

Indulge once in a while. Allowing yourself a treat on occasion can be a really helpful strategy for most people. The thing to remember is portion control. So, if you feel like eating chocolate, have a few small squares and go for a high cocoa version – as a general rule of thumb, aim for 70 percent (or higher) cocoa for the most disease-fighting antioxidants.
