One of the hardest things about exercise is getting started. Once we are in our exercise outfits and warming up, we genuinely feel good about being there and can keep ourselves moving through an hour. Ideally, your gym (or swimming pool or running track!) should be situated somewhere between work and home. If you go to university, perhaps there is a gym or sports facility on site. Keep a set of your exercise kit in your car so that you are limiting every barrier possible to stopping off on the way to or from work to maintain your exercise goals.
Buddy up! Share your fitness goals with a friend or make a new one at your gym and plan to exercise together. You can encourage each other on to make sure you meet your weekly targets. When you are feeling like giving it a miss, hopefully your buddy can pick you up or arrange to meet you so that you don’t talk yourself out of the opportunity.
While you may be performing the same fitness regime regularly, there are simple and effective ways to mix it up and keep your mind and body guessing. If you are a runner you might vary the sprints and longer track work. If you are a swimmer, you can change around the order of your Australian crawl (freestyle), backstroke and other aquatic manoeuvres to reduce that sensation of robotically repeating the same routine every time.
Sometimes maybe something else is going on but it can be hard to separate what is you trying to wriggle out of exercise and what is your body asking for a day off to rest a bit more. If you are not sure, coach yourself into giving it a go for ten or fifteen minutes. Let yourself know that if you really feel like not being there after ten or fifteen minutes, you will wind up and try again another day. More often than not, the endorphins kick in and the enjoyment of the blood rushing healthily through your body propels you on.
Sticking to an exercise routine can be fun and rewarding but for some reason, we seem to talk ourselves out of it half the time. There’s lots of simple ways you can stick to your fitness goals so that by the time your mind tries to talk you out of it, you’re already enjoying yourself.
