Greece produces a vast assortment of geologically produced foods like fruits, nuts, grains, legumes, and vegetables. Greece’s weather is perfect growing for lemon and olive trees. The favourite meat in Greek cooking is lamb whilst the favourite vegetables are beans and eggplant.
The Greek form of cooking has touches of both Roman and Turkish cooking and has through the years been influenced by several other culinary styles. Traditional Greek cooking uses fresh ingredients therefore it is normal to shop daily for best results. Cooking is kept straightforward by enabling the taste of fresh ingredients, herbs and spices to shine through as opposed to covering them up. Grilling, baking, roasting, frying, and stewing are a few of the popular cooking methods.
Both meat and vegetables are cooked using tomatoes, tomato paste, garlic, onions and herbs like sweet basil and oregano. Food is mostly cooked in olive oil. The typical Greek salad is made with raw vegetables and may include celery, onions, peppers and cucumbers. Oregano, salt and pepper maybe added to the salad as a seasoning along with a dressing of olive oil and lemon juice. The salad will have black olives and a soft salty cheese known as feta. Lemon juice and olive oil is often added to salads and then seasoned with salt and pepper.
Soups like lentil and pea are commonly served as part of a Greek meal. The soup is served with pieces of bread along with the typical Greek salad. Soupa avgolemono is a popular chicken soup that is flavored with lemon.
Lamb may be cooked in many ways and the Greeks have some really awesome ways of cooking lamb that brings out its tastes like no other cuisines. To make a Greek shish kebab pieces of lamb are marinated in olive oil, wine and lemon juice. Salt and pepper and a little oregano are added. The lamb is then placed on skewers and grilled. During cooking olive oil is rubbed over the meat.
Moussaka is another popular dish in Greece and is made from an interesting mixture of grounded lamb and eggplant after which it is seasoned with cinnamon, oregano and tomato. Cheese and white sauce are added and then the entire mix is baked in oven.
