Metformin Side Effects Experiences

Metformin is a common medication that is prescribed to people who are suffering from Type 2 diabetes. However, I have also seen it prescribed to people who are looking to lose weight with very little effort. A very close friend of mine, whom I also work with, had taken this drug just for that purpose, to lose weight before her wedding. She had spoken with her doctor, and he had suggested that she try Metformin as there are very few side effects. She thought that this would be a great idea. On her wedding day, she envisioned that she would be beautiful and skinny, shedding those pounds that she just could not seem to rid herself of from just exercise and a tiny diet change.

Excitedly, she began taking the Metformin and the side effects that she experienced were just about nonexistent for some time. As many medications of the market advertise, common side effects of Metformin include; upset stomach, loss of appetite, and a metal taste of the mouth. These were all things that she dealt with about 5% of the time while she took Metformin, which is actually pretty good. It seemed like all was going well for her while dealing with weight loss in this non traditional method, until she began to notice something just was not’t right. Out of the blue she began to experience cold sweats and at the same time, she really lost focus on the things she was doing and had trouble finishing normal tasks. Her speech would start to become slurred, and she felt as if she was going to pass out. She found that sitting down for a few minutes and having something cold to drink would help her get right back on track. We all attributed these symptoms as stress from having to plan a wedding and the demands of our workplace. It truly was a lot to handle.

One day, my friend experienced the same symptoms, except this time was different. Instead of her common cool-down period that helped her to get back on track, she fainted. At a loss for what to do, we all scrambled around her, taking vitals, getting the crash cart, it was like a huge circus. It the midst of this circus, someone had brought the glucometer to test her blood sugar. When the results finally had appeared on the screen, it was clear to everyone that her fainting episode was the result of low blood sugar.

For some time, the symptoms were all there right in front of our face, but we ignored them and attributed them to something else that was going on in her life at this time. But it made sense; taking Metformin can cause a devastating side effect, which can cause someone’s blood sugar to drop to a critical level. Of course, people who suffer from Type 2 diabetes would known to check their blood sugar daily, however when taking this medication for weight loss purposes, one would not think to do the same.

So whether you are using Metformin for Type 2 Diabetes or for weight loss, please be aware of the following side effects:

1. A drop in your blood sugar level.

2. An upset stomach

3. Nausea and / vomiting

4. A metal taste in your mouth

5. Loss of appetite

In the end, my friend did obtain the weight loss results that she had wanted. However, her path that she had chosen led her through some rough patches. She has since stopped the use of Metformin for weight loss purposes and has chosen to take a completely different lifestyle change through diet and exercise to maintain her weight loss goals. While metformin has very limited and noticeable side effects, it is important to check your blood sugar level, as a very critical drop can cause one to go into a coma.
