Stay In Shape By Practicing Muay Thai

Many Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand practice a form of martial arts known as Muay Thai. More commonly known as Thai Boxing. This sport is steeped in history and is the national sport of Thailand.

Muay Boran as it was formerly known differs significantly from today’s form of the sport. This sport now consists of kicks and punches in a ring, and wearing gloves that are very similar to those worn by boxers.

The sport itself has specific rules regarding fighting in the ring. But many of the gym’s out there still practice moves that are deemed illegal in the ring. This shows the difference between it as a sport, compared to the art of Muay Thai.

Because you use your hands, knees, shins and elbows extensively in the art of it all, it is referred to as “The Science of eight limbs”.

The eight limbs are the eight points of contact that an exponent of Muay Thai is supposed to be able to execute a strike from. This is in comparison to two points of contact with a boxer, namely the hands. Or four points of contact with other martial arts exponents, these being the hands and feet.

As with other forms of martial arts, this is a great way to lose weight and stay in shape.

An intense Muay Thai workout involves burning a lot of calories in a little time period. This could be perfect for everyone as you can always start off slow and gradually speed up as you go along.

Typically in Muay Thai you would warm up and go on to resistance training. Do a little Base work then a cooling off routine. But if you are just a beginner you could go easier on the resistance training and increase the base workout.

A base workout generally means working on your shadow boxing. Working out on the pads and sparring. The sparring is normally for when you get more advanced in your training.
