Rain ponchos are commonly used by the military because it serves as an all in one gear during combat. The main purpose of a poncho is to keep the body warm and dry when the rain pours in hard, this gear is made of watertight material. Blanket or woolen fabric, this is what the word pontro means which is where poncho got its original name from. The historic Andes people were the first to create ponchos; their design was a sheet of fabric with an opening for the head. Fasteners are common ways of closing ponchos on the sides when it is draped over the body; of course it also has to have openings for the arms on both sides.
