Today people are more aware of their health and are looking into products that tout health benefits as well as helping them to feel better.
There are numerous diet soft drinks on the market today such as Diet Sprite, Diet Coke and Pepsi Max which contain artificial sweeteners and have fewer calories than normal soft drinks. But, are they a healthier choice than all the rest?
Artificial sweeteners are added to these products instead of real sugar which is full of calories. These types of sugars used in diet soft drinks are fake sugars.
Artificial sweeteners however, may not be as safe as the claims made for them. In a 1974 report by the Food and Drug Administration it was stated that artificial sweeteners may have some safety issues and could be connected to some serious illnesses.
Aspartame, an artificial sweetener could possibly lead to such health problems and brain lesions, brain tumors, lymphoma and cancer. A 2007 report issued by the Food and Drug Administrations states that consuming high amounts of this sweetener may be linked to cancer.
These findings of aspartame causing illness may be better explained by how the body breaks down sugar and uses it for energy, or how the body reacts to artificial sweeteners when they are ingested.
What happens is that when the body begins to process these artificial sweeteners it thinks that it is going to get energy from them, but that is not the case. It does not break down into useable energy and the body must go without.
This may explain the reason why some people who consume diet products are always tired and lack energy. They may also have mood swings and behavioral problems as well when they ingest these fake sugar products regularly.
Are artificial sweeteners safer than regular sugar? No. Sugar may be high in calories but it does not have nearly as many health risks as consuming fake sugars.
