Ending a relationship isn’t easy. If you’ve made up your mind that it can’t continue, you know you have a difficult task ahead of you. This gets harder the longer the relationship has lasted.
People and circumstances change. Our aspirations, desires and outlook evolve as we mature, and what suited us in one setting may be wrong for us in another. Because of this, many, but not all, relationships come to an end at some point. It’s just one of those things.
If you know that you’re in a relationship that you shouldn’t be in, do yourself a favor and end it sooner rather than later. Not only are you wasting your own time, but you’re wasting the other person’s time too.
Of course, it won’t be easy, especially if your partner doesn’t feel the same way you do. Try to give the other person plenty of time to accept the new situation and move on. Once you’re past this difficult part things will start to improve.
Remember that your happiness is important, too. Remind yourself of how much better you will feel once you are single again or starting a new romantic adventure with someone better suited to you.
Unless your relationship has been very short-lived, might I suggest you avoid ending it with a text message, phone call or email? Few people truly deserve that kind of treatment.
The best way to do this is to meet in person in a public place. This will help you make a clean break and avoid you both feeling awkward. Ending a relationship in private is very tricky, it can drag on and you might have trouble getting the other person to leave.
This is an uncomfortable thing no matter how you look at it, but it’s just one of those deeds that needs to be done. Be brave, and realize that no matter what happens, this too shall pass.
