What’s The Big Deal About Antioxidants?

So, Antioxidants have been known about for a number of years now and their benefits are well established. A whole bunch of folks are beginning to understand that poor nutrition, chronic disease and shorter life spans are directly related. There is still a generational gap between the young, who still believe that they’re invulnerable and the young at heart who have reached the age of life appreciation and do appreciate it with every day that passes.

We’re too busy when we’re young to give a damn about growing old, after all, that’s a long way off. Then, we blink our eyes and we’re 30, blink again and we’re 40, the kids are growing fast and will soon be gone. Then what seems like one more breath and we’re 50. Then, what seemed like so long in the future is suddenly upon us and we start becoming concerned about holding on to life as long as we can. Suddenly our health “matters” to us. After all, you don’t see too many older folks going around doing stupid things that will endanger their health. It’s not because they can’t do it, it’s because life has become more precious when the reality of death is so nearby.

Thus, the foolish, youth are not the benefactors of helpful, free information that explains the best methods of extending their life, by choice. Nay, for it is the elder people who gain the most benefit. The reason for this is because the elders (folks over 50) have come to grips with the fact that good health and extended life goes hand-in-hand. They will thusly actively search for various methods of improving their health and extending their lifetimes. There is a reason for this too. After the kids leave the nest, reality hits the parents right in the face. That reality is that the length of life is limited and those limits depend largely on the degree of health. No longer are statements such as, “hey, that’s 25 years from now,” taken for granted. They realize that 25 years is just a blink of the eye. Diseases brought about by aging start to become a big part of their reality and good health is then brought to the forefront and, in order to achieve that longer life with the grandkids, good health is essential. Without a certain degree of “quality” life is reduced to simply an “existence” with very little meaning. And while the subjective term “quality” is important, it’s very meaning becomes a very acute part of our lives.

So then exactly what is the “big deal” about this antioxdant talk?

What if, when you were at that youthful state in your life, you would have had enough foresight to realize that you were going to appreciate life more as you grew older and would be seeking out methods to extend your life? What if you would have started eating foods and taking supplements that contained powerful antioxidants way back then and had continued to take them until the present time?

Well, the odds are quite good that your health would be excellent and that your appearance would be more like a person around 20 years your junior. Most likely, you’d also not be subject to any current degenerative conditions that may be causing you some grievance and your endurance would be nearly as good as it was back then. Your weight would probably also be fairly close to what it was back then too. Now, you may ask, “how could my eating foods high in antioxidants all these years have caused this youthful look and excellent health?” I’m glad you asked.

You see antioxidants have been well known, for a long time, to eliminate a very large portion of the free radicals that your body carries around every day. Those same free radicals that are changing healthy molecules into tissue damaging molecules and causing chronic disease and poor health conditions. Though done on a microscopic level, over time the continuous affect will destroy entire tissues and cause degenerative disease if not held at bay. Antioxidants are the defenses that hold them at bay. When those free radicals are introduced into the body by such methods as smoking, drinking, doing drugs and the like, and if they’re not dampened by antioxidants, they cause things like cancer and excessive aging. Have you ever taken a look at someone who smokes a lot and stays out in the sun? Wrinkles galore. That is free radical damage on the outside. Imagine what the inside looks like.

Unless you had tremendous foresight when you were young, you probably ate lots of high fat foods, may have smoked, drank a considerable amount of alcohol and probably exposed yourself to lots of ultra-violet rays in the summertime, among other things. During this period, it’s also a probability that you didn’t know much about antioxidants and therefore did not take them on a regular basis. That’s why you’re in the shape that you’re in today. And now, you’ve reached that age of wisdom when you realize how stupid some of the things you did in your youth were, however, nonetheless, you want to slow down the aging process and try to gain some of your health back.

You can get back some significant health but it’s not going to happen overnight.

Are you one of those folks to happened to have actually started taking some good, high potency vitamins and minerals many years ago and have never stopped taking them? If so, you have done something really good for yourself. You’re probably in better shape than those who did not. When I refer to “good, potent vitamins and minerals” I’m not talking about the cheapo, barely vitamin containing over-the-counter crap that you can get at the grocery store. You know, the kind that gets lots of advertising on TV? Most of that stuff is marketed well and people tend to believe all that TV marketing. Truth is, most of it is a bunch of malarky (also known in many circles as BS). When I say high potency vitamins and minerals, I’m talking about some usually fairly expensive vitamins that actually contain significant vitamins, minerals and in quantities that really do help you avoid disease. Lots of antioxidants are found in these types of vitamins and minerals.

Don’t believe that old adage that you can only absorb so many vitamins before they’re pissed away. While some vitamins are excreted away, many remain in the fat and in the cells. As long as the body cells can stay saturated with vitamins and minerals, a person will maintain a degree of health. This is because vitamin enriched cells will be stronger and more resilient.

Something that is also pertinent for you to keep in mind is that vitamins without minerals are practically useless. Not many people know this but now you do. Always include mineral supplements, along with your vitamins, in your daily supplemental intake.

The point of all this is to encourage everyone, young and old alike, to take some action. Find a way to incorporate an antioxidant diet into your daily nutrition intake. You don’t have to eat a whole lot of food, just some antioxidant fruits and veggies and/or take adequate supplements.

A great method to use, in order to get an adequate number of antioxidants into your body daily, is to start juicing fruits and veggies. Mix them together and drink a couple of glasses of them a day.

If you will perform this one task and make it a habit, you will live much longer and you will be much healthier. That’s for sure, especially if you’ll get shy of all those activities that produce free radicals. Just cut back on them and take more antioxidants.

There’s no doubt that young people will always do stupid things. We all have done that but until the time that they cure the “stupid” in them, leave the getting healthier and living longer to the older generation, right?

Life is too short for you to let disease and aging stop you from doing what you want to do. Learn how to stave off chronic diseases and live longer just by eating a daily regimen of antioxidant foods
