Stained teeth may prevent you from laughing heartily in the presence of others and make you unhappy every time you look at the mirror. In this case a professionally done teeth whitening job is what you need. But sometimes this may have adverse affects and so is best avoided.
It is important to know that teeth whitening can show adverse effects. People below 16 years should avoid whitening. This is because the nerve endings of their gums may be adversely effected by the chemical bleaches involved in the process. It is also advisable that women who are pregnant or lactating should keep away from such processes.
If you have sensitive teeth or allergies to chemicals, whitening may be risky. Receding gums and defective restorations can also worsen if exposed to chemicals used for whitening. Peroxide compounds used in common bleaching procedures are very powerful compounds, which can react with gums.
These procedures often backfire in case of cavities or certain gum problems. In order to avoid chemicals entering the inside of your teeth, make sure that your cavities are plugged before going for teeth whitening.
Remember, if you have filled or crowned teeth, bleaching may cause uneven whitening as the color of resins do not change in such processes.
The solution therefore, is to do whitening procedures before going for composite fillings, bonding, veneers or crowns. Or else, you could wait for at least two weeks after any of these before going for whitening. This should be enough time for your teeth enamel to naturalize itself with the previous changes.
Do remember that whitening procedures are a good way of getting a brighter set of teeth but if you are looking for a dazzling white set, you may be disappointed.
Many a time the effect of whitening is lost quickly, if you smoke or drink a lot. Only if you take care of your teeth properly is it worth going for teeth whitening procedures.
