When Your Normal Baby Skin Care Routine Doesn’t Work

Did you know that there are a lot of parents out there who think that they don’t need to do much at all to keep their baby’s skin healthy and clean? They just assume that babies are better able to fight off acne and skin problems than adults. Perhaps they think this because babies have over a decade of life before hormones and puberty start playing a role in the condition of their skin. The simple truth is that skin care should start from day one.

A baby’s bath does not need to last a long time. Keeping your newborn baby in the bath tub for too long can be harmful. The bath need only be long enough to wet the baby down, soap him up and then rinse him off. After your baby’s bath is done apply a tiny bit of moisturizer or baby lotion and then towel your baby dry with a soft towel. Take care to dry your baby completely or the left over moisture could lead to rashes or yeast infections. Remember how rolly and polly a newborn baby’s skin is! Make sure that the towel you use is soft!

A baby’s bath does not have to be very long at all. Keeping your newborn baby in the bath tub for too long can be harmful. Your baby’s bath only needs to be a few minutes long–only enough time to get wet, get soapy and get rinsed. After rinsing off the baby, apply a little bit of lotion or moisturizer and then towel her dry. Make sure you dry your baby off completely or a variety of rashes or infections could develop. If you’re doubtful of this just look at all of the folds and ripples in your baby’s skin; moisture can hide in all of those places! Be sure to use a soft towel!

You should always check the label on your baby’s skin care products. Dyes, phthalates, parabens and extra fragrances should be avoided. These are all ingredients that have been known to cause things like rashes and other skin conditions. You don’t want to accidentally irritate your child’s skin when your main goal is to keep it clean! The best products are those that are gentle on the skin. If you don’t know which products are the best for your child ask your pediatrician for some hints before you go shopping again.

Acne isn’t only for teenagers, babies get it too. The hormones that the baby is surrounded by in the mother’s womb leads to the, after birth, development of acne. This is more common than people realize, the hormones trigger the skin to produce oil, the oil fills the pores, the pores get irritated. Never use adult acne treatments on a baby! They are much too harsh and can burn your baby’s skin. Your best option is to either visit your doctor or letting it clear up on its own with regular cleaning.

There are lots of ways to protect your baby’s skin and to make sure it stays clean and healthy. Good skin care habits develop everything so make sure you develop a skin care routine early on in your child’s life.

Baby skin care extends beyond the baby’s face and involves taking care of the rest of the baby’s body as well.
