With increased snow predicted this Thursday you might be starting to consider that you’re going to never obtain a consistent training course going until you grab a road bike and “pretend” your outside. This particular training might suit brain dead roadies, but for the likes of us mountain biker, we should instead feel the terrain, get a sore ass and break some nails, it doesn’t matter what winter throws at us.
Obviously that is easier said than can be done especially when your sat at home with the fireplace blazing, the last thing in your head is “you know what? I wanna go freeze my ass off at the local trail” but there’s a lot of reasons and benefits of taking your trusty steed out for a blast.
Reason One – No annoying “everyday” walkers
Everyone in their the years have had the annoying situation in which a family with kid’s just happened to choose the ideal mountain bike destination to opt for their “pleasure walk”, now nothing is wrong with this but as the rider can easily function as the most annoying thing ever made. Without random kid’s running around and being forced to concentrate on them a lot more than the course you can never truly go full pelt, bring on winter where most of these families stay indoors you almost certainly possess a whole mountain to enjoy, all to yourself.
Reason Two – Snow = Fun
Nothing is more fun than blasting around a trail when ur rear end suddenly slips out and you “just” manage to stay on the bike, the thrill, the fun, all this can be enjoyed 10 times more when the whole trail is covered in pure white slippery goodness.
Reason Three – Fitness
Not riding during winter can be disastrous come spring, last year I totally forgot that riding existed and come spring when the weather was warm and I was ready to hit the trails, I was lucky to make it out of the village alive. From this experience I know that bracing the harsh winter weather just one hour a week keeps me slightly fit and ready to tackle anything come spring. This is why I recommend you go for a light or even rigour “fun” ride every week in winter and if you don’t stay face fit at least you can eat more mince pies at Christmas)
Reason Four (Males Only ^^) – Toughness
Nothing screams out your a guy (or an frenzied man riding his bike) than heading out in the snow and facing the severity of winter at once, now I won’t promise anyone might find you (all those “roadies” hiding inside their warm houses) but if they do are going to pleasantly surprised about how manly you might be as you slog through 3 inches of new snow.
So I lied I possibly could only think of four reasons, well one wasn’t wonderful so three but I cant stress enough the significance of winter riding to your all year cycling enjoyment and along with today’s modern winter clothing you won’t feel the cold.
